Tax Planning Is More Than Annual Compliance
As we near the End of Financial Year (EOFY), we are called to reflect upon a past masterclass that was led by our friends from Leaders In Business. Its message still rings true.
During the discussion, they posed a simple but important question to a group of accountants and advisors:
Is tax planning advisory or compliance work?
Given the audience on the call, accountants who actively operate within an advisory model, it was probably no surprise that there was strong agreement: tax planning is advisory.
Done properly, tax planning is proactive, strategic and business-wide. It requires understanding a client’s goals, future plans, cash flow, investments and growth ambitions. It’s about helping clients make better decisions before events occur, rather than simply documenting them afterwards.
Of course, compliance remains an important component. Every strategy must be grounded in legislation and technical accuracy. But compliance is the foundation, not the finished product.
The discussion served as a timely reminder of how tax planning is often viewed, particularly when compared to broader advisory services.
When people hear ‘tax planning’, they often think about year-end meetings, tax minimisation strategies or ensuring obligations are met before 30 June.
While those outcomes are important, some of the most valuable outcomes don’t come from the tax result itself. They come from the conversations that happen along the way, about future plans, growth opportunities, business structure, succession and long-term objectives.
That’s where tax planning and advisory often overlap. And it’s something we’ve experienced firsthand at Aintree Group.
When we formally launched Aintree Group Advisory in January, the response was fascinating.
Some people responded with, ‘You’ve always done this. Why does it need its own brand?’
Others saw it as a significant expansion beyond traditional accounting services.
Both reactions were understandable.
The reality is that Aintree Group Advisory wasn’t created to introduce a brand-new service. It was created to give greater visibility and structure to something that has always been part of how we support our clients.
Because the best business decisions are rarely made in isolation. They’re informed by good data, thoughtful planning and the right conversations at the right time.
The same principle applies to tax planning.
The most valuable tax planning conversations aren’t focused solely on reducing tax or meeting year-end obligations. They’re focused on helping you make confident decisions about growth, investment, business structure, succession and long-term strategy.
When tax planning becomes part of an ongoing advisory relationship, it shifts the conversation from reporting on the past to planning for the future.
That’s exactly why we established Aintree Group Advisory.
By combining the insights gained through your accounting and compliance work with structured strategic advice, we help business owners turn financial information into meaningful action.
If you’re ready to take a more proactive approach to planning, growth and decision-making, speak with your Aintree Group accountant or adviser about how Aintree Group Advisory can support your business.
Because great advice isn’t about looking backwards.
It’s about helping you make better decisions about what’s next.
