Save on Your Rego: Victoria’s 20% Registration Rebate Explained
We’re all feeling the increasing cost-of-living pressures, and vehicle owners are especially feeling the pinch. In 2025, the average petrol retail price for Victorians sat at 180.3 cents per litre. As of 31 March 2026, Melbourne’s figure had risen to 259.1 cents per litre.
Then, the government stepped in. With excise cuts introduced on 1 April, daily average retail petrol prices were 16.7 Cost Per Litre (CPL) lower compared to the previous day.

With volatile rising fuel costs, initiatives such as these on routine overheads can help to ease our burden, offsetting the cost of vehicle ownership.
The new 20% registration rebate for eligible Victorians intends to do just this.
If you’ve paid your registration recently, here’s what you need to know to reap the benefits.
What is the 20% registration rebate?
This is a government initiative offering eligible drivers a 20% rebate on their vehicle registration.
From Monday 1 June to Friday 31 July 2026, eligible Victorians can apply for a 20% rebate on their vehicle registration payments. This will save the average driver up to $186 per vehicle on their 2025–26 vehicle registrations.
