Instant Asset Write-Off

A Win for Small Business: Instant Asset Write-Off Now Permanent

The new federal budget has made permanent Instant Asset Write-Offs (IAWO) for eligible small businesses.

This allows small businesses to immediately deduct the cost of eligible equipment worth up to $20,000, rather than depreciating them over several years. This endeavours to help businesses invest in growth whilst reducing administrative and compliance requirements.

From technology upgrades to essential machinery, the revised policy is designed to help support productivity, simplify tax reporting, and strengthen confidence across the small business sector.

Read our full analysis all of the key items from the 2026 Federal Budget here.

What Is the Instant Asset Write-Off (IAWO)?

For many small businesses, investing in new equipment, technology, or machinery can place pressure on short-term cash flow. So, how may the IAWO help?

It can be used for multiple assets, provided the cost of each individual asset is less than the relevant limit. It can also be used for new and second-hand assets.

The deduction applies to the business portion of the cost of an asset, in the year the asset is first used or installed ready for use.

Eligible purchases may include:

  • Computers and laptops.
  • Business software and tech tools.
  • Vehicles and equipment.
  • Machinery and tools.
  • Office furniture and fit outs.

This gives businesses faster access to tax relief, and may increase short-term cash flow, helping to support both everyday business operations and business growth.

Nonetheless, it’s important to be aware of potential exclusions and limits.

Depreciation VS IAWO

Normally, when a business purchases an asset expected to last several years, it can’t claim the full cost as a tax deduction straight away. Instead, the cost is spread over the asset’s useful life.

Now, if the asset qualifies under the IAWO, the business may be able to claim the full $10,000 deduction immediately in the same financial year the asset was purchased and installed ready for use.

From Temporary Measure To Permanent Support

Until now, the IAWO was a temporary relief measure. Now that it is permanent, businesses can hope for greater clarity in planning for future investments.

Making the measure permanent provides:

  • Greater certainty for long-term planning.
  • Confidence to invest in equipment and technology.
  • Simpler tax management processes.
  • Reduced administrative complexity.

For many businesses, this means being able to invest when needed without waiting for policy extensions or changes.

Why is this change important?

This measure allows businesses to claim deductions immediately, reducing taxable income sooner and helping to improve short-term cash flow.
