Many email sites block certain emails from coming to your main inbox for safety and spam purposes, however sometimes legitimate emails that you want or need to receive end up in your spam or junk folder without you knowing.

To ensure you receive the emails you want in your main inbox and not spam, you can whitelist certain email addresses.

Here is how to do so with Gmail, Outlook.com and Yahoo!.

Gmail email accounts

Add the email address to your contacts

If you’re using Gmail on your desktop:

  • Click on the person icon to the right of your screen
  • Press ‘Get Started’ (if you haven’t set up any contacts yet)
  • Click ‘Create Contact’

Ensure emails aren’t marked as spam

  • Go to your Spam folder
  • Select the emails you want to whitelist
  • Mark as ‘Not Spam’

Use a filter for the email address

  • Go to Settings (click the cog icon in the top right corner)
  • Click on ‘Filters and Blocked Addresses’
  • Select ‘Create new filter’
  • To create a filter, either enter the domain name (part of email address that is after the @ symbol) in the ‘From’ section OR enter the email address in the ‘To’ section
  • Click ‘Create Filter’
  • Select ‘Never send it to Spam’ and ‘Create Filter’ again

Outlook.com email accounts

Add the email address to your contacts

If you’re using Outlook.com on your desktop:

  • Click on the double person icon to the left of your screen
  • Select ‘Create Contact’
  • Fill out the details and click ‘Create’

Add to safe senders

  • Click the ‘Settings‘ icon in the top right corner
  • Click ‘View all Outlook Settings’
  • Go into the ‘Email’ then ‘Junk Mail’ tab
  • Select ‘Add’ under ‘Safe senders and domains’
  • Type in the full email address or the domain

Yahoo! email accounts

Add the email address to your contacts

If you’re using Yahoo! on your desktop:

  • Click on the ‘Contact’ icon on the top right corner of your screen (the first icon)
  • Select ‘Add a new contact’ at the bottom of the page
  • Fill out the details and click ‘Save’

Use a filter for the email address

  • Select the ‘Settings‘ icon
  • Click ‘Filters‘ and then ‘Add
  • Enter a Filter Name
  • To create a filter, either enter the domain name (part of email address that is after the @ symbol) in the ‘From’ section OR enter the email address in the ‘To’ section
  • Select ‘Inbox‘ as the folder to deliver the email to
  • Click ‘Save‘ and then click ‘Save‘ again
