What is a Tax File Number (TFN)?
A Tax File Number (TFN) is a unique, personal reference number for the ATO. You keep your TFN for your whole life, so it is important to keep it safe and ensure you’re the only one using it.
It is free to apply for one and you’ll need it to:
- apply for government benefits or allowances
- lodge a tax return online
- apply for an Australian business number (ABN).
How do I apply for one?
1. Set up your myGovID
Step 1: Download the myGovID app on your phone or other smart device
Step 2: Enter your personal details. Your email address must match the one you use for your myGov account.
Step 3: Verify your account using your Australian passport and one of the following:
- Birth certificate
- Drivers license (including learner’s license)
- Medicare card
Step 4: Verify your photo using the scanner provided. This is to check that it matches your identification.
