How Tall Poppy Syndrome is Killing Your Personal Brand

Tall poppy syndrome is real.

Particularly here in Australia, there’s an unspoken pressure to stay in your lane, not be too visible, not put yourself ‘out there’ too much.

Don’t stand too tall. Don’t say too much. Don’t make others uncomfortable.

And yet, at the same time, we’re told to build a personal brand. To show up and to lead. To share our thinking.

Those two things don’t sit comfortably together.

The Consequences of Cutting Others Down

I’ve seen so many capable, thoughtful professionals hold themselves back on platforms like LinkedIn, not because they don’t have something valuable to say, but because they’re worried about how it will be received.

‘What will people think?’
‘What if it comes across the wrong way?’
‘What if I get judged?’

But think of it this way, what other people think or say about you is none of your business.

What IS Your Business

Showing up with clarity.
Sharing your perspective.
Contributing to the conversation.
Backing yourself.

Because, if you’re doing meaningful work and building something of substance, not everyone will agree with you, and that’s okay.

In fact, it’s a sign you’re actually visible.

Building a personal brand isn’t about ego. It’s about consistency and contribution.

It’s about letting people understand how you think and what you stand for.

And yes, there will always be noise.

But the people who matter? They’re not the ones quietly criticising from the sidelines.

They’re the ones also showing up, also building, also contributing.

So if you’ve been holding back, consider this your nudge.

Key Takeaway

Say the thing. Share the insight. Post the idea.

Let yourself be seen.

Because staying small doesn’t serve you, and it certainly doesn’t serve the people who could benefit from hearing what you have to say.
