Are You Feeling Underappreciated At Work? – Insights From The CEO
Something common to hear as a leader of people is, ‘I don’t feel appreciated’.
Sometimes that’s true.
But sometimes recognition is being given in a language we don’t naturally recognise.
Not everyone says ‘thank you’ the same way.
Your manager might not praise you every day, but they might show appreciation by giving you flexibility when you need it.
Your employer might not publicly celebrate every achievement, but they might tell you to take a day off after a big project.
Your team might not send glowing messages of thanks, but they might trust you with greater responsibility and autonomy.
Recognition can look like trust. It can look like flexibility. It can look like investment in your development. It can look like understanding.
Before concluding that you’re unappreciated, ask yourself an honest question:
Am I looking for appreciation, or am I looking for validation?
There’s a difference.
If you’re expecting praise every time you complete the work you’re employed to do, you may be seeking validation rather than recognition.
That doesn’t mean appreciation isn’t important. It absolutely is.
But it is worth reflecting on whether people are already showing their gratitude in ways you haven’t considered.
And if you genuinely don’t feel valued, have the conversation.
Most leaders want their people to feel appreciated. Often the issue isn’t a lack of care, it’s a mismatch between how appreciation is being shown and how it’s being received.
Before deciding nobody notices your contribution, take a look around.
You might find the recognition you’re looking for has been there all along, just in a different form.
