How to practice social responsibility in your everyday operations.
There is a lot of pressure on business owners to give back to the community, and while we definitely encourage this, it can be tough to know the best way to go about it.
The idea of making a huge financial commitment to a cause can be daunting, especially if your business is small or new.
But sometimes it’s the little things that can make the most difference, especially if it’s a consistent change that supports a long-term goal.
So here are the little everyday things we do at Aintree Group that contribute to a cause wider than just keeping our office running.
We’re going to use all these items anyway, so why not make sure they’re coming from an ethical source?
“Who Gives A Crap” Toilet Paper
This company is definitely a bit of fun, in the best way possible. Roughly 40% of the world’s population don’t have access to a toilet, and they’re working to change that with a bit of humour – and lot of toilet paper.
Who Gives A Crap makes toilet paper with environmentally friendly materials, and donate 50% of profits to help build toilets for people in need.
So if you ever see a big cardboard box in our reception with “Who Gives A Crap?” plastered along
the side – you know it’s not a disgruntled employee, but actually toilet paper for a good cause.
Our first step in reducing our environmental impact is minimising paper usage in favour of tools such as Docusign and Quotient. This means documents are sent out electronically, rather than being printed and sent on physical paper (which also improves security).
According to Docusign, our Environmental Savings are enormous just from using their paper-less product alone:
However, even as a “paperless office”, there are unavoidable instances where documents need to be printed, and for this we always use recycled printing paper.
Recycled paper is very easy to come by, most office paper supplies have a few different options in stock. It’s an easy way to substitute in a more eco-friendly option for an everyday office product, without a huge price difference.
We get our recycled printing paper from Officeworks.
“Thank You” Personal Care Products
Most people have come across Thank You’s products before. The dark bottles and minimalist labels have become quite recognisable across many homes and businesses.
Thank You is a not-for-profit organisation that makes a range of products such as hand wash, lotion, sanitiser, bottled water, baby products, soaps and scrubs. 100% of the profits are used to fund projects that help get safe water, toilets, hygiene training, safe births and healthcare to empower people in need.
We use Thank You products in our office bathrooms and kitchen. They’re affordable and good quality, and contribute more to the world that just clean hands.
We use Eco-Bins in our office, which use colour-coded labelled bins to separate different kinds of recyclable products. Separating these products as we dispose of them decreases greenhouse gases and the amount of waste going into landfills.
They also use 50% less electricity and water to produce, and create very little waste during the production process.
“Elyse” Eco-Friendly Hand Towels
This brand is relatively new to us at Aintree Group. We recently had our first batch of Elyse eco-friendly hand towels to use in the office.
These hand towels are made from sustainable and easy to replenish sources, sugarcane bagasse, bamboo pulp and wood pulp. Each ton of sugarcane bagasse equates to three cubic metres of wood being saved.
